June has worked as a midwife in Jersey since 1979. She has taught Aquanatal classes in preparation for childbirth since 1991 and established HypnoBirthingJersey in 2003.
June decided to introduce a Doula service to Jersey as the need to support women following the birth of their baby became more obvious. “We live on an island and do not always have the benefit of family support in the early days and weeks after giving birth”. Mums go home from hospital within a few days when frequent feeding, lack of sleep and often recuperation may affect the enjoyment of their new baby.
Having an experienced mother – a Doula – to look after the mother and help her with her new baby and other children if appropriate, is invaluable. Dads will feel reassured returning to work when they know that help is at hand.
June leads a team of enthusiastic and highly motivated Doulas who as well as having experience with their own children, have successfully completed a University accredited Doula course. Additionally they have attended a Breast Feeding Educational Programme and a St John Ambulance course for infants and young children.
Although Jersey Doulas are available for Antenatal and Labour support, it is the Postnatal period where June believes that “mothering” help is so beneficial.
“I will never forget how my mum came to look after me when my own children were born, it was a special time”.
What do Doulas do?
Doulas provide antenatal, labour, and post-natal support to mothers.
Jersey Doulas
Jersey Doulas have varied professional backgrounds and life experiences, but all have “mothering” skills and are passionate in their aim to enhance the birthing and postnatal experience.
Our Doulas have all trained with Doula Consultancy Services at Middlesex University in London. The benefit of an academically based and accredited Doula training improves each Doulas own knowledge. It is however the individual personal maturity, experience and life skills which enable the Doula to nurture and support those for whom they care.
Each Doula is rigorously police checked, carefully screened and insured in our aim to assure your safety and confidence.
Jersey Doulas are familiar with Jersey Maternity Unit but will also support women giving birth at home.
